The built-in route
How to sync Google Contacts
Do this first. It is free, it takes a couple of minutes, and it fixes the majority of “my contacts aren’t syncing” cases on its own.
Add the Google account to the device
Open your device settings and add the Google account the contacts should come from. On Android that is the accounts screen; on iPhone and iPad you add the Google account from within the Contacts settings.
Turn Contacts on for that account
Signing in isn’t enough by itself. Find the account you just added and switch on its Contacts option alongside Mail and Calendar. That toggle is the thing that actually moves contacts.
Set where new contacts are saved
In your contacts app settings, make the Google account the default for new contacts. Anything saved to the device itself, or to a SIM card, never leaves that phone.
Check the account on the web
Open contacts.google.com in a browser. Whatever is listed there is what the account genuinely holds — the fastest way to tell a sync problem apart from a contact that was never saved.
Repeat for every account you own
Sync only covers the one account you switched it on for. A second Google account, an iCloud account or an Outlook account each need their own setup, and none of them merge with this one.

The limitation isn’t quality, it’s scope. Google keeps one account tidy and is structurally blind to every account beside it.
Two Google accounts stay two lists
Work and personal don’t merge just because both are on the same phone. You see them stacked in one app, but they remain separate address books that nothing reconciles.
iCloud and Outlook are invisible
Google never reads a contact stored in another provider. The person you added on an iPhone into iCloud simply isn’t in your Google account, and never will be.
Duplicates multiply across accounts
Google’s own merge tool only sees duplicates that are Google-to-Google. The same person held in Google and iCloud is the copy that keeps coming back after every cleanup.
Nothing reconciles conflicting edits
Fix a phone number in Google and the version in Outlook stays wrong. There is no arbitration between providers, so the older value survives wherever you didn’t touch it.
Outlook is a CSV away, not a sync away
Exporting a CSV from one and importing it into the other is a snapshot. It goes out of date the moment it lands and usually adds duplicates on the way in.
Device-only contacts go nowhere
A contact saved to the handset rather than the account looks completely normal until the phone is replaced. Then it is gone, and no sync setting can bring it back.

Almost every case comes down to one of four things, and none of them require reinstalling anything.
The Contacts toggle is off
Mail arrives, so the account looks connected. Open the account’s settings and confirm Contacts is switched on, not just Mail.
You’re looking at a different account
Two Google accounts on one device is the classic trap. Check which account the contact was saved to before deciding it vanished.
The contact never left the phone
If the default save location is the device or a SIM, that contact exists in exactly one place. Move it to the account and it appears everywhere.
Sync is being deferred
Battery savers, restricted background data and a poor connection all delay a sync rather than break it. Put the device on power and Wi-Fi and give it a few minutes.

How do I turn on Google Contacts sync?
Add the Google account in your device settings, then switch on the Contacts option for that account specifically. Signing in for mail doesn’t sync contacts by itself. After that, set your Google account as the default for new contacts so nothing gets saved only to the phone.
Why are my Google contacts not syncing?
In most cases the Contacts toggle is off for that account, the contact was saved to the device or a SIM card instead of the Google account, or you are signed in to a different Google account than the one you are looking at. Open contacts.google.com to see what is genuinely stored in the account before assuming sync is broken.
Can I sync Google Contacts with Outlook?
Not natively in both directions.
